Do you know where you clothes came from? The
conditions they were made in? The people who made them? These are the questions
that are being asked today (on the 24th April). For most of us the
answer to these questions is ‘no’. As long as the clothes look good on the
hanger when it’s time to buy, where they came from is not an important issue. In
reality it should be. Just as we are more concerned about where our food comes
from we should also be aware of where our clothes originate from.
On 24th April 2013, tragedy
struck the Rana Plaza in Bangladesh. A factory which made clothes for
high street brands collapsed killing and injuring thousands
of people. It was known that the building was unsafe but due to the need to meet garment quotas created by shoppers like us nothing was done to improve the conditions. In fact workers were made
to work in unsafe conditions with bad wages and often suffered abuse from their
employers.
Fashion Revolution Day was to created to commemorate the incidents Rana Plaza incident and get people asking questions about how their clothes were made. With enough people asking questions, we can incite changes so tragedies like those that happened in Bangladesh don't happen again.
Their current campaign #insideout challenges you wear your clothes inside out. The exposed labels will highlight the brands you have chosen to wear and will get you thinking 'how ethical is this brand?'. I showed my support by getting involved in a Fashion Revolution Day inside out shoot which was organised by creative director Emma Slade founder and stylist of Back of the Wardrobe (www.backofthewardrobe.com). She brought together a group of fabulous women who want to do their bit for ethical fashion. They include:
Katie Jones from K2TOGDesigns (www.k2togdesign.co.uk)
Tida and Lisa Finch from Finchittida Finch (wwww.finchittidafinch.com)Abadesi (www.cloakandswagger.com)
Danielle Ward (www.littlefashbird.com)
